We would like to take this opportunity to invite you to the forthcoming British History of Youth and Community Work Study Conference. Organised, like the previous four by the editorial board of the journal Youth and Policy.
This like the others will run from tea-time Friday through to after lunch on the Sunday. The format like the earlier gatherings will include a mix of plenary sessions, workshops and 'surprise' events. Amongst the plenary speakers who have already agreed to attend is Bernard Davies. He will be speaking on the recent history of youth work in Britain. Another special event will be a screening of the film made nearly fifty years ago on Withywood youth centre. Following which Sue Robertson will talk about the history of this highly influential project.
At the heart of each conference are always the workshops. Usually numbering around 20. The breadth is always impressive covering an enormous range of topics linked to the history of youth work, adult education, community work and the settlement movement. As before we hope to include workshops relating to the historical development of practice in countries besides the UK. One of the delights of this assembly is that around half the participants deliver a workshop. This is a relaxed gathering of enthusiasts keen to talk to and learn from each other in a friendly venue.
After each conference we publish a book based on the workshops and talks. The next will contain chapters based on workshops delivered at both the British and the 2006 Minnesota conference. All attending the fifth conference will receive free a copy of the book based on the last conference.
The conference takes place in Ushaw College located just outside Durham. Designed by Pugin Ushaw is amongst the most architecturally important and beautiful buildings in the north of England. If you would like more details please write or e.mail Tony Jeffs or download the booking form.
